Spinal Decompression in Matthews
The discs of your spine are fluid-filled cushions that separate the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. Trauma, wear and tear and even the effects of gravity can cause the discs to become compressed, squeezing the fluid much like when you squeeze a water balloon. When the fluid bulges out in this way, it can press on nearby nerves and cause pain.
For patients dealing with this often debilitating pain, the medical response is typically drugs and/or surgery. Fortunately, at Queen City Health Center, we offer another alternative—one that may help restore disc health and relieve your pain in a natural and non-invasive way. Spinal decompression therapy has helped many patients get back to doing the things they love.
How It Works
We use a special table that gently stretches your spine. You’ll lie on the table with straps across your waist and chest to keep your spine at the correct angle. Starting very gently, the table will apply a stretch to your spine and then release it. It will do this repeatedly, creating a pumping motion that helps to pull bulging discs back into place and increasing the flow of fluids and nutrients to the area to facilitate healing.

What to Expect
It’s perfectly fine to be nervous about trying something new. We’ll talk you through the whole process and answer all of your questions. The stretch will start at a very gentle level and will only increase when you’re comfortable with that. Also, you’ll have a kill switch in your hand, so you can stop the table if you’re ever feeling unsure.
We suggest wearing pants or shorts for this therapy—it can be a bit awkward if you’re in a dress or skirt. Also, there is Velcro on the straps, so we recommend wearing fabrics that Velcro can’t “grab.”
