Back Pain Epidemic

Number One Visit

The most common reason people see a doctor is due to back pain in America. Whether patients visit for pain relief or endure back surgery, a common medication prescribed is an opioid. The opioid crisis has become an epidemic in itself. Even for mild cases, most Americans are also used to taking an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Instead of accepting the risk of falling into a medicated reliance, there must be another solution to healing these issues.

Providing Another Solution

Most back pain issues start as a mild ache, but over time create a larger issue. Instead of looking for sources to mask pain, we should focus more on what your body is telling you. When your body has a pain response, it signaling that there is a specific cause needing to be healed. Chiropractic care has shared the great connection between the spine and the rest of your entire body. Instead of undergoing unnecessary surgery, or relying on medications, there is another solution to these five underlying causes of back pain.

5 Back Pain Causes + The Solutions

1. Subluxation

Each joint within the spine needs to have movement. A subluxation occurs when there is an interference to the joints, vertebrae, or disks. We sit 90% of our day from things such as sitting at work, sports injury, sleeping wrong, and more. This creates a stress response, like back pain.

Solution: Go to a chiropractor to get consulted, x-rayed, and then adjusted to remove subluxations within the spine.

2. Inflammation

There can be inflammation within your apophyseal joints. These joints can be jammed. It is most common with anyone who has a pelvic tilt, athletes, or people who sleep on their stomachs. If you have forward head posture, your joints can lock up as well. When these are inflamed, it can cause back pain.

Solution: Strengthen and stretch your hip flexors and hip extensors. Also, eliminated foods that increase inflammation.

3. Disk Issues

This can include disk herniation, a bulging disk, disk degeneration, or broken disk. Inside our fluid-filled disks, there are ligaments. Movement creates the flow of old fluid and new fluid. You can also tear these ligaments over time and loss the proper curve in your spine which then distributes weight on your spine improperly. This will eventually cause back pain.

Solution: Prioritize movement daily, which can also be used as preventative care. Perform a full range of motion exercises.

4. Organic Issues

Kidney issues, like kidney stones, can cause a dull aching pain. Digestive issues, like constipation, can cause back pain. Added pressure while pregnant can also cause back pain. Upper back pain can be signaling gull bladder issues, such as inflammation.

Solution: Consult with your chiropractor on nutrition to heal the gut. Also, getting specific adjustments to the spinal regions connected to these organs.

5. Muscle Strain/Tear

This is the least common issue that stems from back pain. Most people assume this is the issue because of your muscles spasm. Car accidents or sports injuries typically cause this and would be considered as an acute injury as opposed to the other causes.

Solution: Have your chiropractor take x-rays to see all possible reasons for back pain to identify this cause. Rest and adjustments will allow your body to properly heal itself.

Dieting FADs

There are many diets and programs spread over the internet, television, and books. When a person chooses to try multiple programs, it is referred to as “yo-yo dieting.” This involves completing a program, but gaining the weight back after the program ends. Each program promises weight loss, but what happens when the program is over? How do you maintain the weight you are looking to achieve?

Create a Foundation

Unfortunately, there are countless ideas and opinions about how to lose weight best. Instead of it being black and white, weight loss is truly dependent on your body. Many factors play a role in weight loss including hormones, calories, diet, exercise, and more. For example, if your hormones are imbalanced and not working properly you will have a hard time losing weight. If you are consuming an immense amount of calories, you will inevitably gain more weight. A true weight loss program needs to be individualized, but a general weight loss can be founded on these five crucial steps.

5 Foundation Tips for Long-term Weight Loss

1. Remove Certain Foods

The main foods you want to remove are sugar, grains, bad fats, and dairy. The majority of many people’s diet contains each of these foods mainly stemming from the food pyramid given to us promoting these food groups. There are many diets such as the Keto and Paleo, but the only diet to focus on is an anti-inflammatory diet. Inflammation is what causes weight gain, imbalanced hormones, and disease. The body creates a natural anti-inflammatory called cortisol. When you eat these foods causing inflammation, cortisol increases, and your body goes into survival mode. When your body is in this stress state, you will gain weight and sustain an imbalance of hormones.

2. Intermittent Fasting

When you do intermittent fasting, it gives your body time to heal and reset. When you limit the window of time you are eating, you eat less and your body uses stored energy (fats) during the fasting state. Working out in your fasting period will also kick your body into burning fat faster. A common way to do IF is fasting 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window. More benefits from this system of eating include boosting your immune and digestive system, lowers insulin levels, oxidizes your body, and more.

3. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Movement and exercise are vital for weight loss. This type of workout, however, is beneficial due to its duration in time and health benefits. HIIT does not raise stress levels or interfere with hormones. It also does not burn muscle; instead, it keeps you in a fat-burning mode. Sometimes the type of workouts you do can make your body hold onto weight due to the excess of stress you are putting on your body. HIIT workouts can be as short as 10-20 minutes long and utilize your fat as energy even after the workout is complete.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps improve digestion, breaks down food, and improves your microbiome. It is recommended to take one shot of ACV in an 8 oz. glass of water first thing in the morning and can be repeated right before bed. This also stabilizes blood sugar levels and keeps insulin levels down. You can research the many health benefits ACV has along with supporting weight loss.

5. Don’t Eat Before Bed

Make sure the last thing you eat is 3-4 hours before going to bed. When you go to sleep, your body uses glucose to regenerate your body. After your body burns through glucose, it will produce ketones that shift your body into a fat-burning state. Begin by shifting late-night eating habits to drinking tea or ACV because it will not disrupt your fasting state.

Let’s Talk About Constipation

Breaking the Ice

Constipation isn’t a typical dinner table conversation. However, the amount of people suffering with this issue would cause you to believe it should be talked about more. Not only do adults suffer with constipation, but also many kids today have bowel issues. Most people may think it is normal to go once every other day or even once a week, but the healthy amount is 1-2 times a day at least.

Shifting the Culture

Unfortunately, it has been engraved in us to consume a large sum of wheat and dairy. Most foods also contain sugar, which causes many people to stay sick. If you continue to eat how everyone else is eating, sickness will continue to rise. In order to shift your health, you have to be consuming healthy foods that the majority of the population may not be consuming. Shifting your nutrition will be the most important change for future generations in order to create a paradigm shift in American culture. Most doctors proscribe laxatives which are synthetically made to flush the body out. The negative impact these cause deplete the nutrients in your body. Rather than prescribing something for the symptoms, it is more important to deal with the cause.

5 Things to Eliminate

1. Gluten

Gluten is a natural protein in wheat, but it is hard for your body to fully digest.

2. Dairy

The majority of dairy is fed GMO food, given hormones and antibiotics which we then consume.

3. Sugar

Specifically eliminate refined sugar. This causes a lot of inflammation throughout the body.

4. Lectins

Foods with high amounts of lectin, such as tomatoes and peppers, can cause leaky gut issues.

5. Inactivity

Eliminate sedentary activities. Get active as possible and spend time with your kids outside.

5 Things to Add On

1. Water

Drinking clean filtered water is vital. Even adding sea salt can replenish minerals to your body.

2. Adjustments

Within a week to two weeks constipation can shift from consistent adjustments.

3. Exercise

Movement is what culture misses most. Be mindful of moving throughout your day. Increase the amount of times you walk, stress, and exercise daily.

4. Supplements

Magnesium, probiotics, and enzymes all assist with natural digestion within the body. These are also natural and safe for children to eliminate constipation.

5. Vegetables

Consuming vegetables as raw as possible will be the best way your body can break down food and receive the most nutrients. Try to only steam or saute them.

The Modern American Diet

Western culture has evolved American’s health to plummet. More people are ingesting man made food, which contains high levels of toxins that disrupt our bodies ability to heal itself. Obesity, cancer, diabetes, and more health problems are on the rise due to the MAD diet. On top of depleting nutrients in our diet, many Americans try multiple diets throughout the year that can effect your gut and immune system as a whole.

Ending FADs Once and for All

When you try multiple different diets, your body is unable to keep up with the drastic changes. The truth is some diets work for specific people, but for others they are damaging. Instead of complicating your weight loss, eating the right foods with a few tips will allow you to sustain a healthy body. Doing these three things will get you in your summer shape in no time.

3 Fast Tips to Get in Shape for Summer

1. Exercise

Exercise means a lot of things to a lot of people. Keeping it short and simple will actually maximize your weight loss. The best workout is 10-20 minutes of high intensity. This decreases your appetite, does not increase cortisol levels, and increases your HGH which helps your body burn fat FAST. An example of a 15 minute workout is doing sprints, jumping jacks, or push ups for 1 minute and resting 30 seconds.

2. Water Intake

To be slim and more trim, you have to prioritize your water intake. It is vital to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, if you weighed 150 pounds, you would drink 75 ounces of water each day. This will decrease cravings, increase hydration, and eliminate hunger pains.

3. Adaptogens

Due to our stress-filled environment, our stress levels are typically high. Along with our environment, traumas and exercise can also increase stress levels. Higher stress levels make your body carry more weight. Adaptogens allow our body to be more resilient to stress.

Bonus Tip: Chiropractic Care

Similar to adaptogens, chiropractic care relieves stress levels by aligning your spine in the correct posture. Adjustments put your bodies alignment in the best shape to allow your nervous system to function at its optimum ability. Doing these three simple steps and continuing with regular adjustments will have you in the best shape your body can be.

Just like there’s an “app” for everything, there’s a natural remedy for just about any health issue you can think of. Activated charcoal is one of those remedies. It’s a great substance for removing toxins from the body, and its uses are countless.

Stomach bug? Activated charcoal.

Kid accidentally swallowed a bottle of poison from your cabinet? Activated charcoal.

Got a big pimple on your forehead the day before your wedding? Activated charcoal.

Teeth yellow? Activated charcoal.

It sounds like a strange way to detox, but it works. I’ve seen it take a child sick with norovirus from throwing up every 15 minutes to sleeping for 6 hours straight and feeling completely normal again the next day. I recommend it to any of my patients who are looking for a natural detox solution. You can buy this stuff at any health food store or online, in capsule or powder form. And it can be used for a variety of ailments.

How does activated charcoal detox your body?

Activated charcoal has a porous surface with a negative electric charge. Most unwanted toxins and gas are positively charged, so if you’re familiar with the phrase, “opposites attract,” then you already know how this works. Very simply, the charcoal binds to unwanted toxins and gas to rid them from your body. Taking it regularly can help you detox your body from the toxins we take in every day from our air, food, water, and personal care products.

Here are a few unique uses for activated charcoal as a natural detoxifier:

Digestive problems. Whether you have indigestion from something you ate, or you caught a contagious stomach bug, this amazing substance can relieve the symptoms you’re experiencing within minutes.

Acne. Mix the powder form of activated charcoal with just enough water to make a paste and spread it on your face like a mask. Do this face mask treatment once or twice a week for 30 minutes each time, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how infrequent your breakouts will become.

Odor eliminator and teeth whitener. Brush your teeth with activated charcoal to relieve bad breath and whiten the enamel. I know it seems weird that you can use a black substance to whiten your teeth, but it’s true!

General detoxification. Even if you don’t have an ailment, you can still use activated charcoal to detox from eating processed foods or to prevent illness when you come in contact with someone who’s been sick. Because it binds to toxins that we take in every day, and which often lead to sickness, fatigue, and a host of other problems, you’re sure to notice a difference when you use it. Be sure to take it between meals and a few hours after taking vitamins and other supplements, as it may interfere with their absorption by your body.

How to Detox Your Body Naturally With Water

When you hear the word “DETOX”, you might have a tendency to freak out and think “this will be really hard.” Or you may think you’ll have to stay home next to a bathroom all day!

But detoxes really aren’t that scary.

The truth is, your body has its own natural detoxification system that runs every day through your kidneys, liver, and lymphatic system. That system is fueled by your nervous system and your endocrine system (aka your hormones). It is designed to excrete unwanted chemicals, pesticides, oxidized cells, and more.

While some people may be in need of a major detoxification regimen from time to time, everyone can give their natural detoxification system a boost with a simple water recipe drank daily.

Your body is made up of 90% water, so it’s imperative that you make sure you’re drinking enough every day. Below are 4 different ingredients you can add to your water to aid your body’s natural detoxification. You’ll reap many benefits, including more energy; clearer, hydrated skin; regular digestion; boosted metabolism and more!

Cucumber Water Recipe : Wash and cut an organic cucumber into thin round slices, and add it to your regular water. Keep sipping it throughout the day to keep your body hydrated. Cucumber contains anti-inflammatory properties, which also help to curb acne.

Ginger Water Recipe: Ginger root cleanses your system completely. It aids in digestion and perfects your metabolism. This is also very important to avoid skin breakouts and acne. Simply cut it into julienne slices and add it to your water. Ginger is very potent, so be sure to add in small amounts until you’re comfortable with the taste.

Mint Water Recipe: Mint is very good for digestion; it also helps to eliminate toxins in the stomach. It also adds a sweet taste and fresh aroma to your water, making it an instantly refreshing drink. All you need is a few leaves!

Lemon Water Recipe: Lemon not only cleanses the body, but alkalizes too. Add a couple of thinly sliced lemons into a jug of water for extra vitamin C and reap the benefits of natural detoxification!

Day 5: Stay Hydrated

Thanks for joining us in our 12 Days of Christmas celebration! We are excited for the Day 5 challenge, because it’s one of the easiest action steps you can take to start getting healthier, and one of the fastest ways to notice a difference in your body.

In case you haven’t been keeping up with our announcements last week, we are celebrating 12 Days of Christmas, QCHC-style and inviting all of our patients, friends and family members to celebrate with us by taking one action step each day toward a healthier New Year. Here’s the breakdown of the first 4 days of challenges, which began last week:

Day 1: Try this healthy holiday recipe.

Day 2: Drink alkalizing lemon water before bed.

Day 3: Take a few minutes to forgive someone who has wronged you.

Day 4: Get moving! (Exercise)

And, without further ado, here’s your Day 5 Challenge:

Day 5: Stay Hydrated!

Learn how much water you need to drink in order to stay hydrated, and commit today to begin drinking that amount every day.

Here are 10 reasons to get and keep you motivated to stay hydrated:

  1. Water composes 75% of your brain.
  2. Water regulates your body temperature.
  3. Staying hydrated keeps your skin looking young and slows the aging process.
  4. Water protects your heart.
  5. It helps you burn fat.
  6. It prevents constipation.
  7. Staying hydrated decreases fatigue.
  8. Water carries oxygen to your cells.
  9. It helps flush toxins out of your body (which in turn helps you lose weight.)
  10. Finally, it helps you control your calorie intake.

The question remains…

How much water do you really need to drink?

Many people will say “8 glasses a day,” but that’s arbitrary. How much you really need depends on your body weight. We use the following simple formula to calculate how much water is necessary for optimal hydration:

Your weight (in lbs.) ÷ 2 = Amount of water you should drink each day (in oz.)

1 glass is equal to 8 ounces. So if you weigh 130 lbs., you’d simply divide that by 2 to arrive at 65 oz. of water, or roughly 8 glasses a day.

There you have it. Commit to start drinking more water and staying hydrated each day, and we’re sure you’ll notice a difference in how you feel.

Stay tuned for our Day 6 Challenge to be posted tomorrow! And while you’re at it…
