When I tell people I’m a Charlotte chiropractor, it’s always interesting to see the reactions I receive. People have many different opinions when it comes to the validity of chiropractic care and whether it actually achieves what it claims to achieve.

As a schooled Charlotte chiropractor who has been in the profession for many years, and as someone who has received chiropractic adjustments herself, I can attest to the effectiveness of chiropractic care—not just for pain management, but for many chronic ailments that Americans today are suffering. As someone who was in and out of doctors offices throughout childhood with respiratory issues, ear infections, and chronic sinus infections, I can testify to the effectiveness of chiropractic care. Once I began receiving adjustments, my life changed. I began to notice a huge difference in my overall health and quality of life and no longer needed medications to feel better.

A story like mine might be difficult to believe if you’ve never experienced the benefits of Charlotte chiropractic treatment for yourself, as are the stories of many of my patients. I wanted to write this post to outline a few of the common myths people associate with chiropractors and to shed some light on why they exist and what’s really true when it comes to chiropractic care.

Myth #1: “Chiropractic is quackery.” Many people are very skeptical about chiropractic care, perhaps because they’ve had a bad experience with a Charlotte chiropractor in the past. Maybe you were promised a fix that you never received or that only lasted a short time before you had to spend more money to get “fixed” again. Or maybe you’ve just heard the saying “chiropractors are quacks” from other people who have had negative experiences and you believed it without going to see one yourself. Some believe that because chiropractors don’t go to school as long as medical doctors, their education must not be legitimate. Whatever the case, the history of “chiropractors as quacks” stems back to an effort made by the American Medical Association to destroy the chiropractic profession. Check out the video below to learn more:

Myth #2: “Chiropractors are all the same.” Not all chiropractors are created equal. Many chiropractors in Charlotte, for example, focus adjustments for pain management or joint realignment, but they may not understand or believe in using chiropractic care for the treatment of other ailments. At Queen City Health Center, we have a holistic approach to chiropractic care, which means that in addition to spinal adjustments, we encourage our patients to improve their health through nutrition and lifestyle changes. Click here to learn more about the 5 DREAM principles and how this well-rounded approach has literally changed the lives of many of our patients!

Myth #3: “I’m not in pain so I don’t need to see a chiropractor.” Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic care is not just for pain management. As one of the most dedicated family chiropractors Charlotte NC has ever seen, I can attest to the value of chiropractic treatments for many different ailments, including asthma, ear infections, chronic illness, and autoimmune disease. I have adjusted patients of all ages and backgrounds, from babies, to seniors, and professional athletes, and any one of my patients will tell you how much of a difference they’ve seen since implementing this form of holistic healthcare.

Myth #4: “I can’t afford to see a chiropractor.” My answer to this is, “can you afford to get cancer?” If your answer is “no,” then I assure you that you most certainly can afford to see a chiropractor. In fact, I’d argue that you can’t afford NOT to! A holistic Charlotte chiropractor can help you save tons of money in the long run on medical bills, prescription drugs, and expensive lifestyle choices that you may not even know are hurting your health. Also, many chiropractors, like myself, work directly with insurance companies. At Queen City Health Center, we don’t stop there. We work directly with our patients, taking your budget and needs into consideration, to put together a long-term plan that will be much more effective from a holistic perspective and not just another temporary fix.

Seeing a Charlotte chiropractor not only helps reverse years of damage caused by poor posture or bodily injuries; it is also a great way to take a proactive approach to your health, even before the damage is done.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding chiropractic care. Many people think chiropractors are quacks, and that chiropractic is not a legitimate form of health care or treatment for disease. However, there are many neuromuscular based disorders that chiropractors can help to correct. As a matter of fact, there are several studies out there to prove it.

Here are 5 common conditions that you may be able to overcome naturally by regularly visiting a south Charlotte chiropractor near you:

#1: Sciatic Nerve Pain

Also known as sciatica, this condition is normally treated using corticosteroid injections, the side-effects of which can do more harm than good, and result in overmedication long-term. A better approach, according to a study published in the European Spine Journal, is chiropractic care. Findings uncovered a 72% success rate for patients who received chiropractic adjustments, compared to a 50% rate for corticosteroids and a 20% rate for physical therapy.

#2: Lower Back and Neck Pain

A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2003 showed that chiropractic care resulted in faster recovery than both general practitioner care and physiotherapy in 183 patients with neck pain who were randomly allocated to one of the 3 methods. Not only that; the cost of a chiropractor in Charlotte was 1/3 the cost of the other conventional treatments. So not only can regular adjustments help you recover faster from neck pain; they can also save you money long-term!

In another study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 56% of chiropractic patients reported improvements in their low back pain, while nearly 1/3 of medical patients reported worse low back pain after treatment.

#3: Tension & Migraine Headaches

Headaches are the second most common condition managed by chiropractors (back pain is #1). A group trial found a 90% reduction in the number and frequency of headaches experienced by 22% of people who received chiropractic treatment. 49% reported in significant reduction in pain intensity, within the same study.

That sure beats taking a pill, doesn’t it?

#4: Colic & Ear Infections

That’s right mamas! Charlotte chiropractic care is useful for so much more than just pain management. If your baby has colic or an ear infection, a few adjustments can make all the difference. Chiropractic care can even help to prevent both conditions by strengthening the immune system. There are tons of studies citing this fact—including a 2012 study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics. But don’t take my word for it. Look it up! Better yet, come see me next time your child starts complaining of pain in his ear. 🙂

#5: Athletic Performance

Did you know that 50% of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff? I’ve treated many of them myself. Famous figures like Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana have all been under chiropractic treatment, and with good reason: it works! Studies have shown that it is not only effective at pain reduction and management; it actually boosts athletic performance by reducing oxidative stress, relieving muscle tension, boosting the immune system and enhancing pulmonary function. It can also increase energy levels naturally.

Bottom line: Charlotte chiropractic care increases bodily function, which frees up your immune system to focus on keeping you healthy. If your health is a priority for you (and it should be), investing in regular preventative care by seeing a Charlotte chiropractor is worth adding to your to-do list this week.

Don’t wait any longer. Book your appointment today by calling 980-422-2000!

Just last year, roughly 4,500 NFL former players received a settlement from a lawsuit made against the league for allegedly concealing the long-term health risks of concussions. If you’re passionate about watching sports, especially football, you’ve probably heard of this condition. You may have even suffered one yourself.

Either way, it’s important to be aware of what this injury entails, the serious, short-term and long-term effects it can have on the brain, and how to treat it most effectively to avoid reoccurring symptoms by seeing a chiropractor in Charlotte NC.

“Concussion” is a broad term that describes a brain injury caused by trauma—usually a bump, hit or jolts to the head that results in an altered mental state. Symptoms vary and may be any combination of the following:

  • Problems with balance
  • Difficulty communicating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased mental clarity
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Sensitivity to light and loud noises
  • Memory issues
  • Vomiting

According to a new study, an estimated 1.6-3.5 million sports-related brain injuries occur in the U.S. each year, 136,000 of which occur in young athletes during their participation in high-school sports.  However, these statistics may be grossly underestimated.  According to reports from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program, “between 1.7 and 3 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur every year.  Five out of ten concussions go undetected or unreported.  One in 10 high school athletes who play contact sports will suffer a concussion this year.” The good news is, seeing a chiropractor in Charlotte NC can have a dramatic positive impact on these stats.

According to research, one simple approach to recovery is resting the brain from cognitive activities, which are defined as those “that require you to think harder than usual.”  One particular study suggests that it takes an average of 20-50 days for patients to report “back-to-normal” cognitive function after suffering head trauma.  If your child has or gets a concussion, this may be the simplest intervention.

In addition, there are natural approaches, such as seeing a chiropractor in Charlotte NC, that can complement an existing recovery program. These include: nutritional supplementation to support brain tissue recovery, as well as regular chiropractic adjustments.  When a person experiences a concussion, the force endured by the skull shifts segments and impacts the overall structure of the spine.  It only makes sense that with an impact injury of high force that induces a concussion, the entire spinal structure should be evaluated and put back in proper position to ensure the normal function of all bodily systems—especially the central nervous system.  Without proper restoration, future problems can arise, including headaches, migraines, neck pain, insomnia, hormone-related problems, fatigue, brain fog and more.

Before undergoing any treatment, a comprehensive examination from a chiropractor in Charlotte NC that includes orthopedic testing and x-ray studies should be performed to determine proper protocol to alleviate swelling on the central nervous system and increase healing.

Parents, I strongly recommend if your child or even you have had a concussion to receive a proper evaluation of your spine and nervous system by a chiropractor in Charlotte NC.  The journal of integrative health care states, “therapies offered by chiropractors benefit the athletes that have sustained sports-related concussions.”  There is also plenty of evidence revealing the devastating long-term effects of untreated head trauma.  If this is you, contact our office at 980-422-2000, or click here to request a free 15-minute phone consultation to discuss your needs.

When you think of asthma you may envision taking an inhaler on the sidelines of your sporting events or before PE class in high school. Or worse, you may envision a scary visit to the ER while fighting for a breath of air.  Truth be told, asthma is a real disease, a serious disease and a scary disease especially if you suffer from it’s symptoms. You are not alone if you or anyone you know suffers from asthma. In fact, it is the most common chronic disorder occurring in children, affecting an estimated 7.1 million children under the age of 18. The good news is, a Charlotte chiropractor can help you treat and overcome your asthma symptoms.

These real asthma statistics make the disease even more scary:

  • 3,384 deaths in 2009 were attributed to asthma attacks.
  • Asthma is the 3rd leading cause of hospitalization.
  • 21% of the U.S. population suffers from asthma.
  • $50.1 billion healthcare dollars are spent directly on asthma

What the general public and healthcare profession can tell you in the fight against asthma is the common triggers to avoid in order to reduce asthma attacks.  These include: exertion from exercise, secondhand smoke, sudden climate changes, exposure to dust mites, pet dander, pollen and other airborne allergens. However, did you know that asthmatic symptoms are not caused by an under-active immune system, but can actually be attributed to an overactive immune system? As a Charlotte chiropractor, I’ve seen it firsthand.

Common asthma treatments:

Today, the most common treatment for asthma and asthma attacks are various forms of steroids. Well-known drugs include albuterol, singular and advair.  And the side effects associated with these type of medications are reduced immune system function, increased chance of pneumonia, weakened adrenal function, weight gain, high blood pressure, increased risk of cancer, neurological diseases and even death.  The risks are certainly high, and you may be thinking “but what other options are there besides medication?” Charlotte chiropractic care is certainly one good option!

The options presented by the majority in the medical community are simply covering up symptoms at best and are never really getting to the root cause of asthma.  It may be necessary in the short term to use medications for asthma, but long-term, what does your medicine cabinet say about your health. Are you healthier when taking countless OTC’s & prescriptions, or are you healthier when you don’t have to resort to a medicine cabinet full of drugs?  Obviously, if your medicine cabinet is empty, you’re much healthier, because you don’t need to be taking medications! We help our patients come off their medications with Charlotte chiropractic care.

Asthma and chiropractic care:

As a Charlotte chiropractor we teach you how to get to the root of your disease and address that first. When it comes to asthma it is a known fact that your brainstem, as well as nerves from C1 and T1,T2 nerve roots, control your breathing.  Any interference to these nerves can lead to asthmatic symptoms and asthma attacks.  We actually check these nerve roots in the office to determine if chiropractic treatment can reduce the symptoms of asthma or completely eradicate the disease.  In fact, a study published on chiropractic treatment for asthma found that after 60 days of care, asthma attacks had been reduced by 44.9%, and the percentage of medications being used by patients had been reduced by 66.5%.

This disease can easily affect you, your kids, your friends, or your neighbors. All it takes is any trauma (mini or micro) such as falling off a bed or a bike or playing contact sports. Even the birthing process can cause a shift in your spine and pressure on your nervous system. Don’t wait get your friends and family checked today! Refer a friend to our Charlotte chiropractic office and be entered to win a Breville Juicer! You’ll also also rest easy knowing you have a chance to save their life.

The number of people 65 and up is expected to double by 2030 due to the baby boomer generation and the extended life expectancy of Americans.  Whether you are near the age of 65 or you are pressing into your 30’s or 40’s, what you’re about to learn will apply to you and can literally save your future!

With the increased number of 65+ communities in 2030, health care costs are also expected to rise.  The current average cost of health care in the U.S. is around $10,000 per person/year. An increase of over 25% means a family of 4 should be prepared to pay $50,000 in medical bills a year in 2030. Forget saving for college and retirement; now most of us will have to start saving for health care costs if we don’t do something about this growing trend!

But there is good news. You can combat the rising costs of health care by staying as healthy as possible, and doing so is not as difficult as you might think. There’s a saying I often use to illustrate this need to my patients: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.  If you’re not taking any preventative measures to maintain your health, now is the time to start.

Not only will you save money in the long run; as an added bonus, your quality of life will increase.

Who doesn’t want to have more energy, sleep better, stay off medications and enjoy their favorite activities?

Here are 5 ways chiropractic Charlotte NC care can help you before and during your golden years:

#1: A Charlotte chiropractor can help you maintain a healthy fitness routine.

Movement is crucial to every cell, tissue and organ in your body.  As my mentor, Jack Lelane often says, “the moment you stop moving you’re dead.” When you stop doing physical activities, your bones begin to develop what I call cavities—a.k.a. arthritis/decay/degeneration. You also gain excess weight, your sleep is not as restful and disease processes start to develop. Seeing a chiropractor regularly can help you stay accountable for maintaining an exercise routine that will keep you healthier, longer.

#2: Chiropractic Charlotte NC are can help you maintain healthy nutrition.

Movement, chiropractic care and nutrition go hand in hand.  You need the proper building blocks to prevent disease, degeneration and arthritis, and also to fight bacteria’s and viruses! Chiropractic adjustments allow for cellular nutrition to get to your spinal cord, spinal discs, and bones—all of which are vital in maintaining proper health and optimal function in your body.

#3: Chiropractic adjustments stimulate brain activity.

The proper term for brain and nerve development is actually neural plasticity. Every chiropractic adjustment you or your kids have will encourage neural plasticity allowing for a higher brain function and helping to prevent diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders.

#4: Chiropractic Charlotte NC care strengthens your immune system.

Your body’s immune system is controlled by the central nervous system which is housed in your spine.  When it misaligns it can slow the immune system down allowing for coughs, colds, viruses and bacteria to proliferate. Every chiropractic Charlotte NC adjustment helps your immune system work as efficiently as possible.

#5: Chiropractic care reduces pain.

By far the most common reason for patients to see a chiropractor is pain. There are thousands of peer-reviewed studies, which serve as evidence that chiropractic Charlotte NC care reduces pain better than any pain killer or even surgery. Pain is also the number one reason patients visit their medical doctor. If you can stay in proper alignment through regularly visits to your chiropractor, you won’t have to worry about taking pain medications, battling their nasty side-effects, or having pain hold you back from enjoying life!

Again, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Make a point to invest one more effort into your prevention account each week: do an extra 10-minute workout, make an appointment at your chiropractor’s office, or eat more green vegetables. Every little effort makes a big difference.

Are you experiencing tension between your shoulders, headaches, neck pain, or discomfort? Do you spend a lot of time looking downward at your computer, phone or mobile device for extended periods of time?

Then you, my friend, may have what Charlotte chiropractors today are referring to as “text neck” syndrome.

What is “text neck” syndrome?

“Text neck” syndrome is what happens as a result of overusing your neck, back, and shoulder muscles, usually when looking forward and downward for extended periods on any mobile device or object such as a cell phone, computer, e-reader, or tablet. Sitting or standing in this position puts a lot of strain on your spine. While technology adds a great amount of convenience to our lives, it can also create enormous amounts of pain and eventual health problems as the curvature in your spine puts pressure on the nerve signals needed for optimal bodily function.

The average adult head weighs 10-12 pounds! You can imagine how tilting the face down increases the gravitational pull on the back of the head. The total force exerted on an adult head when viewing electronics at a 60-degree angle forward is equivalent to your muscles carrying 60 pounds of weight. In turn, this posture creates pain patterns—but even worse, it degenerates the spine. Long-term forward neck posture may lead to muscle strains, disc herniations or pinched nerves. These strains on your body are bound to take a toll on your health over time, especially with the amount of time most people spend on electronic devices.

Are you sitting up straight while reading this?

As a professional Charlotte chiropractor, I hope so! Spending extensive amounts of time on your phone may be causing you neck pain, headaches, numbness, and tingling that goes all the way into your fingertips. It may also be causing tension between your shoulders and affecting your overall health in ways you can’t see right now.

How to minimize your chances of developing “text neck” syndrome:

  1. Set boundaries! This means no looking at your phone during meals, no texting while in the car or at work, and no using your mobile device while in bed. (That just means more cuddle time with your spouse or significant other!)
  2. Maintain proper posture while using technology. Make sure you’re sitting and standing up straight with your head directly on top of your shoulders and spine, your belly tucked in, and your back slightly arched. When looking at yourself in the mirror, your ears, shoulders, and hips should always be in a straight line.
  3. See a Charlotte chiropractor and get adjusted. If you haven’t had your spine checked for proper alignment, make an appointment with your local chiropractor to get an X-ray and schedule regular adjustments.

As your Charlotte chiropractor, I want you to be the healthiest you can be, so you can live a long, vibrant life. So put the phones down and connect face-to-face with those around you! If you, a friend or a family member needs their neck checked for “text neck” syndrome, feel free to make an appointment with our team by calling us at: 980-422-2000.
