There’s a popular saying these days that losing weight is 80% nutrition and 20% fitness. It’s more than just a saying. At Queen City Health Center, we embrace this as fact. I’d even go so far as to modify the percent ratio as 90/10.
Nutrition encompasses not just food but supplementation as well. In a day and age where our food sources are continually being depleted due to chemicals in our environment, supplements are an essential component in a healthy nutrition plan. In addition to high-quality, non-GMO protein powder, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, we also use and recommend essential oils for supplementation.
Essential oils can help with a variety of ailments, but there are particular oils that you can use to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Below are 3 that we recommend specifically for weight loss.
1. Grapefruit Essential Oil for Weight Loss
Made from the grapefruit peel, this essential oil gives your body’s metabolism a boost by activating specific enzymes in your saliva that help to break down fat. It is also rich in D-limonene and other compounds that support the drainage and cleansing of your body’s lymphatic glands. When you apply grapefruit oil topically to the skin, it serves as a wonderful diuretic as well as stimulating your lympatic system to burn fat. You can also diffuse it in your home or add a few drops to your water to curb food cravings.
2. Ginger Essential Oil to Lose Weight
Ginger oil is made up of compounds called gingerols, which are scientifically proven to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is responsible for disease, so it’s essential to your overall health and weight-loss goals to reduce it as much as possible. Eating sugar increases inflammation, so reducing your sugar intake can also help, and it just so happens that ginger oil helps to curb sugar cravings as well! Ginger oil is perfect for diffusing or adding to your favorite hot tea in cold-weather seasons.
3. Cinnamon Oil for Weight Loss
A third oil essential to supporting weight loss is cinnamon oil. It works by regulating your body’s glucose tolerance factor or GTL as well as the levels of glucose in your blood. For this reason, it’s especially great for diabetic patients.
Unstable blood sugar can cause you to overeat and have less energy. By balancing your blood sugar with cinnamon oil, you’ll crave sugar less, which will help you lose more weight in the long term. It’s the perfect essential oil to add to smoothies, tea, baked goods, oats, or fruit for extra flavor.
Not all essential oils are created equal. Make sure the oil you use is pure therapeutic-grade essential oil and is approved for internal consumption before you take it orally. We use and recommend doTerra essential oils at Queen City Health Center for all of our patients. Click here to buy them from Dr. Holly.
When I tell people I’m a Charlotte chiropractor, it’s always interesting to see the reactions I receive. People have many different opinions when it comes to the validity of chiropractic care and whether it actually achieves what it claims to achieve.
As a schooled Charlotte chiropractor who has been in the profession for many years, and as someone who has received chiropractic adjustments herself, I can attest to the effectiveness of chiropractic care—not just for pain management, but for many chronic ailments that Americans today are suffering. As someone who was in and out of doctors offices throughout childhood with respiratory issues, ear infections, and chronic sinus infections, I can testify to the effectiveness of chiropractic care. Once I began receiving adjustments, my life changed. I began to notice a huge difference in my overall health and quality of life and no longer needed medications to feel better.
A story like mine might be difficult to believe if you’ve never experienced the benefits of Charlotte chiropractic treatment for yourself, as are the stories of many of my patients. I wanted to write this post to outline a few of the common myths people associate with chiropractors and to shed some light on why they exist and what’s really true when it comes to chiropractic care.
Myth #1: “Chiropractic is quackery.” Many people are very skeptical about chiropractic care, perhaps because they’ve had a bad experience with a Charlotte chiropractor in the past. Maybe you were promised a fix that you never received or that only lasted a short time before you had to spend more money to get “fixed” again. Or maybe you’ve just heard the saying “chiropractors are quacks” from other people who have had negative experiences and you believed it without going to see one yourself. Some believe that because chiropractors don’t go to school as long as medical doctors, their education must not be legitimate. Whatever the case, the history of “chiropractors as quacks” stems back to an effort made by the American Medical Association to destroy the chiropractic profession. Check out the video below to learn more:
Myth #2: “Chiropractors are all the same.” Not all chiropractors are created equal. Many chiropractors in Charlotte, for example, focus adjustments for pain management or joint realignment, but they may not understand or believe in using chiropractic care for the treatment of other ailments. At Queen City Health Center, we have a holistic approach to chiropractic care, which means that in addition to spinal adjustments, we encourage our patients to improve their health through nutrition and lifestyle changes. Click here to learn more about the 5 DREAM principles and how this well-rounded approach has literally changed the lives of many of our patients!
Myth #3: “I’m not in pain so I don’t need to see a chiropractor.” Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic care is not just for pain management. As one of the most dedicated family chiropractors Charlotte NC has ever seen, I can attest to the value of chiropractic treatments for many different ailments, including asthma, ear infections, chronic illness, and autoimmune disease. I have adjusted patients of all ages and backgrounds, from babies, to seniors, and professional athletes, and any one of my patients will tell you how much of a difference they’ve seen since implementing this form of holistic healthcare.
Myth #4: “I can’t afford to see a chiropractor.” My answer to this is, “can you afford to get cancer?” If your answer is “no,” then I assure you that you most certainly can afford to see a chiropractor. In fact, I’d argue that you can’t afford NOT to! A holistic Charlotte chiropractor can help you save tons of money in the long run on medical bills, prescription drugs, and expensive lifestyle choices that you may not even know are hurting your health. Also, many chiropractors, like myself, work directly with insurance companies. At Queen City Health Center, we don’t stop there. We work directly with our patients, taking your budget and needs into consideration, to put together a long-term plan that will be much more effective from a holistic perspective and not just another temporary fix.

I see a lot of pregnant mamas at Queen City Health Center, and one of the first things they are looking to do postpartum is lose that baby fat! Many women will use supportive postpartum belly bands or girdles to hold in and hide their protruding bellies, but do these tools really work when it comes to losing belly fat, or are they simply fads and gimmicks?
I get a lot of questions about Belly Bandits, It Works! Body Wraps, and similar gadgets. To be honest, I have never used one of these, so I can’t say from experience whether they are effective, but as an professional Charlotte chiropractor who has adjusted plenty of postpartum patients, I can tell you what does work when it comes to losing weight post-pregnancy.
Ditch the sugar. I bet you thought I was going to say ditch the fat, right? Nope! Contrary to popular belief, fat is actually good for you. Healthy fat, that is. Eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (also called essential fatty acids) and low in sugar. Fat burns fat, so when you decrease your sugar intake, your body will burn fat for energy instead of burning sugar. This will help you lose that baby fat a lot quicker.
Exercise. I know, it’s a no-brainer. Pelvic floor exercises and workouts that target your lower abdominal muscles are especially effective. You don’t need to go crazy, especially right off the bat. Wait until your 6-week appointment to start an exercise routine, and even then, don’t make it too rigorous (especially if you’re breastfeeding). Begin with light stretching, gentle yoga, and maybe some pilates to target your midsection. After a few months, you can work your way up to light interval training to help you burn more fat.
Eat more. It sounds counterproductive, but it actually works. If you are breastfeeding, you’re going to need the extra calories. And if you’re exercising, you’ll burn more fat, so you’ll need to make up the difference. In turn, this will actually increase your metabolism and boost fat loss long-term. Make sure your diet is rich in healthy protein (organic grass-fed beef and free-range chicken) and a colorful variety of organic, non-GMO fruits and vegetables.
Minimize toxins. They are everywhere. In our air, in our water, in the food we eat… Your body encases excess toxins inside of fat cells. It seems to show up primarily around your midsection. (Am I right?) Minimizing your body’s exposure to toxins decreases the build-up of excess fat.
Do postpartum belly bands work? I don’t know, but I recommend focusing on what does work first. Girdles are great for support and you can certainly use one for that purpose. I wouldn’t rely on it for weight loss, but it can definitely help you create a flatter shape and even get back into your pre-preggo jeans after just a few months! (A major goal for a lot of women I’ve talked to.) Either way, make sure to incorporate each of the 5 DREAM principles into your daily routine for maximum results!
It’s official: we are living in a world of slouchers.
The increasing use of computers and mobile devices causes us to shift our head, neck, and shoulders downward for hours at a time, while sitting at a desk or even when we’re standing upright or walking.
It’s easy to curve into a bad postural position and not even realize you’re doing it until you stand up and feel the pain that results from doing so for long periods. But obtaining good posture is essential to your overall health, wellbeing, and productivity.
As a Charlotte chiropractor who adjusts patients week after week whose jobs require them to sit and use a computer, I can attest to the fact that “text neck” is becoming a sad reality. However, all hope is not lost! There are ways to practice and establish better posture over time. Here are five exercises you can do daily to help give your spine a healthy curve.
Crunches better your posture by strengthening your core muscles. To do a crunch correctly, lie down with your back flat against the floor and your knees bent. Place your hands lightly on the back of your head with your elbows spread wide, and using your core, lift your head, neck and shoulders off the floor while “crunching” your abdomen.
#2: Wall angels
These are like snow angels, but you do them while standing straight up, feet hips-width apart, with your head and back against the wall. This exercise helps to strengthen your upper back, while forcing your head into proper alignment.
Another core strengthener, cat/cow is popular among yogis! It’s a great exercise to increase spine flexibility, stretch the neck and torso, relieve stress, and calm the mind.
Start out on all fours with your hands directly underneath your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. (This is also called tabletop pose.) To move into cow pose, inhale as you drop your belly toward your mat, arching your back while looking up toward the ceiling and pushing your shoulders back and down, away from your ears. To move into cat pose, exhale as you round the spine toward the ceiling while drawing your bellybutton inward. Alternate between these two positions.
#4: Head Weighting
Head weighting helps to move your spine into proper alignment with your head and neck. This exercise is a practice employed in Maximized Living chiropractic offices (like Queen City Health Center!) We encourage our patients to wear their head weights once a day for anywhere from 2-20 minutes. Click here to purchase a head weighting system from our Maximized Living store.
Like cat/cow, cobra is another popular yoga pose that increases spine flexibility while strengthening and stretching the chest and shoulders. It also helps to open up the lungs, which is great for alleviating respiratory issues.
To move into this pose, begin by lying face down with your legs extended behind you and the tops of your feet resting on the floor. Place your hands directly under your shoulders and point your fingers forward while hugging your elbows into the side of your body. Pressing down through the tops of your feet and pubic bone, spread your toes, inhale, and gently lift your head and chest off the floor. Keeping your lower ribs on the floor, draw your shoulders back and down away from your ears and lift your heart. Begin straightening your arms to lift your chest while pressing the tops of your thighs down firmly. You can stay here in low cobra or deepen the stretch by straightening your arms, but only do so as much as your flexibility allows.
